FUSIC Course Information
The FUSIC Courses consist of three separate courses: Echocardiography , TOE and L.A.V.
Echocardiography Course
SevernFUSIC is aimed at all trainees & consultants who want to utilise ultrasound in the care of acutely and critically ill patients
The 1 day echocardiography course offers lectures and workshops with nearly 4 hours of hands-on scanning practice in groups of 3 to maximise learning and motor skills
We are accredited for 5 CPD points from the Royal College of Anaesthetists
Our expert faculty is formed of FUSIC mentors, supervisors and BSE qualified clinicians from the Severn region that utilise echo regularly in their professional practice
The cost is only £250 for the day and includes lunch and refreshments
The course will teach you how to:
- Achieve the 4 standard echo (TTE) views: parasternal long axis, parasternal short axis, apical 4 chamber and subcostal
- Interpret the images obtained
- Diagnose potentially treatable causes of cardiac arrest & circulatory collapse, such as pericardial collection, tamponade, pulmonary embolus and hypovolaemia
- Understand the pitfalls and limitations of focused echocardiography
- Understand the requirements & mechanisms for achieving FUSIC accreditation
Lectures and workshops include:
- Basic physics, optimal image acquisition and sonoanatomy
- FUSIC heart examination
- Assessment of filling, ventricular function and common pathologies
- Hands on sessions
- Interesting clinical cases
- Achieving FUSIC heart accreditation as a trainee

FUSIC Focussed TOE (fTOE)
The Severn FUSIC Focussed Trans-oesophageal Echocardiography course is aimed at all trainees & consultants who want to utilise ultrasound in the care of acutely and critically ill patients
The 1 day echocardiography course offers lectures and workshops with nearly 4 hours of hands-on scanning practice in groups of 3 to maximise learning and motor skills.
Scanning is performed using Intelligent Ultrasound Bodyworks scanners to demonstrate both the necessary normal views as well as real pathology.
The course will teach you how to:
- Make decisions as to when to perform a focused transoesophageal echocardiogram over trans-thoracic or other imaging modalities, and recognise the limitations of focused study
- Prepare patients for TOE procedures, adhere to safety protocols, and engage in risk-benefit discussions
- Obtain the 8 recommended focused TOE views including: ME4Ch, ME2Ch, MELAX, ME bicaval, ME RV inflow/outflow, TG SAX, Ascending aorta LAX and descending aorta SAX.
- Recognise the following pathology: global or regional LV dysfunction, right ventricular dysfunction, haemodynamic assessment including signs of low preload, pericardial effusion, aortic dissection, pulmonary embolism or gross valvular pathology.
- Understand the requirements & mechanisms for achieving FUSIC accreditation
Lectures and workshops include:
- Basic physics, optimal image acquisition and sonoanatomy
- FUSIC TOE heart examination
- Hands on sessions
- Interesting clinical cases/pathology
